Design students enhance the wayfinding system for the Marbles Kids Museum

OVERVIEW

For this project, Ayumi Kinoshita, Melissa Ciro and I were tasked with enhancing the visitor experience at the Marbles Kids Museum©️ in Raleigh by developing and redesigning an engaging campus map system.
SOLUTION

Through a research and ideation process, we created a playful yet functional visual and informational map that can be easily updated to reflect content changes.

CAPABILITIES

• Primary & secondary research
• Ideation & Prototyping
• Experience Design

BACKGROUNDLocated in the heart of downtown Raleigh, Marbles Kids Museum offers a variety of educational and interactive experiences for visitors of all ages.

-However, navigating the museum's many exhibits and facilities can be a challenge for both first-time visitors and frequent guests.
-To enhance visitors' experience and streamline their navigation, the Marbles team sought to develop a playful yet functional wayfinding system that would be easy to update as the museum evolves. -To accomplish this, they partnered with our design studio at NC State to research, ideate, and execute a comprehensive wayfinding solution.

APPROACHThe ideation and iteration process for the Marbles Wayfinding project was extensive, involving over 20 total iterations of the design.

We began with initial sketches and many initial layouts and continued to refine the design through multiple rounds of testing and feedback.

We tested various color schemes, typography choices, and iconography to ensure that the design was visually appealing and easy to understand.

We also incorporated user feedback into the design, making adjustments to the layout and functionality of the map to better meet the needs of visitors to the museum.

PAIN POINTS & SOLUTIONS
Revitalizing the Marbles Wayfinding project involved strategic solutions to enhance the user experience. We streamlined the map by eliminating unnecessary details, employing consistent color coding, and organizing the key for improved legibility.
-
Addressing visibility concerns, we relocated the map to a prominent spot. Ensuring a consistent visual hierarchy, we standardized logo sizes, prioritizing legibility.
-
To tackle incomplete information, we utilized a clean white background, eliminated distracting gradients, and ensured the comprehensive coverage of our campus in the map.
